Welcome Letter

August 10th, 2015

Hello parents! I am so excited to share this new blog with you!

Welcome to the 1st Grade! I hope you’ve had a good summer and are excited about transitioning from Kindergarten to Elementary School! This is a big year and a big change for you. I’m looking forward to a positive and productive school year. The start of a new year holds the promise of new discovery and learning as well as the prospect for personal growth in all areas. We will do a lot of reading, writing, and learning, and we will have fun doing it together!

First grade is very important for developing the necessary tools needed to be a successful reader and learner. We will spend a lot of time this first quarter improving our phonics skills and learning how to apply new reading strategies for success!

Students are asked to bring the following supplies to school, please be aware that we will be placing materials together and creating a community supplies center, so all materials will be available for all the students in class in order to promote community awareness and responsibilities, with the exception of their personal pencil case and water bottles:

·         1 pencil case with 1 pencil and eraser

·         1 box of pencils

·         Crayons, markers, and watercolor pencils (Faber Castell make great ones)

·         Scissors, glue, sharpeners

·         Tissue paper for the bathroom

·         A personal towel/handkerchief and water bottle

·         Six (6) A-4 notebooks (one for each major subject and ECA)

·         3 or more books to add to a class library

·         Healthy snack and water (no junk food, chocolate bars, or soft drinks)

Please also be reminded that:

Students are required to wear their full school uniform and black shoes to school Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as days which we will be having Mass celebrations. Wednesdays and Fridays students can wear PE uniforms, they may bring an extra PE shirt to change in to after PE class if they wish to.

Students should come to school no later than 8:30 AM every day. Please be punctual. Students will be ready and waiting to go home at 4:10-4:15 PM every day.

I would also like to collect $4,000 NTD from each student for the class fund. This fund will be used to purchase additional supplies the class may need, to rent costumes for special events, for class field trips Sports day teams shirts, year book, school magazine, etc.

So much happens in Grade 1! Many important transitions take place as your child enters Elementary School, so it’s very important that a good parent-teacher relationship is fostered. Your child’s Assignment Book and Communication Book will go home every day, and it will need to be checked by a parent. Important notices about school events and personal notes regarding our class and your child will be sent home through the Communication Book, so it’s important that you check it every day.

I encourage you to use our class blog to keep up to date with all homework assignments, special announcements and general information. This will be updated daily and I will be using photos and quick summaries of the day to keep you informed. I will be tracking your child’s behavior through Class Dojo, an online program where they will earn points and recognition for positive behavior. I will be sending home information about this program and how it can help you stay up-to-date on how your child is performing behavior-wise while at school.

If you ever have any comments, questions, or concerns, please write to me in the Communication Book. You can make an appointment with me through the book or through Ms. Lee in the Administration Office.

Again, welcome to Grade 1, I am very excited of sharing a world of exploration and discovery with your children!

Sincerely,

Phyllis Lopez
