Grade 1 Quarter 2


Unit 1: Initial, Medial and Final Consonant Sounds

Review the 21 consonants and their sounds. Associate each of the consonants with the sound it stands for in the initial, medial and final positions.

Recognize the sounds and associate them with the sound they represent.

Identify and spell pictures names that begin and end with consonants.

Unit 2: Short Vowels

Review and extend understanding of short vowels and the sound they stand for.
Short vowels: a, e, i, o and u.

Identify rhyming elements containing the short vowel sounds.

Distinguish among the short vowel sounds.

Recognize high frequency words in context.

Apply the long vowel rule as an aid in decoding and in using words in context.

Unit 3: Long Vowels

Associate the vowels a, e, and i with the long sounds they stand for.
Identify rhyming elements containing the short vowel sounds.

Distinguish among the long vowel sounds.

Recognize high frequency words in context.

Apply the long vowel rule as an aid in decoding and in using words in context.
