Thursday Aug. 27th 2015

Hello all, here is a quick recap of what we did in grade 1 today:

Language Arts - We wrote a small story together as a class on the board using simple sentences. The story was called "The Broken Robot". Later kids were placed in partners and began discussing ideas for them to write their own small story. we will continue this project tomorrow. 

Math: We practiced some more addition! Solved many addition problems in our books and used connecting green cubes to make sums and break them apart to find the addends. 

Phonics: We took end of Unit 1 Assessment for phonics this included initial. medial and ending consonant sounds. We also took a pretest for Unit 2 to measure growth and compare with end of the unit exam. 

Science: We began our first Investigation today! Each group was assigned a new baby plant, we thought of different ways of treating the plants and decided to investigate which was the best way of taking care of them, we will post some new results next week with progress pictures. Ask your child how he needs to rake care of his/her plant!

They will have a visitor speaking in the auditorium today in the afternoon for ECA. 

Important reminders: Please make sure your child have a Christian Living Notebook, as Father Prudencio has said they do not all have and a folder for Health class.

Hi parents,

Midweek recap for everyone:

Language Arts: More telling sentences. Proof read sentences adding capital letters and periods. Finished some work in our English Practice Work Book. Students are doing very well in Language arts classes so far! 

PE: Due to the storm, kids went with Mr. Yanna to the auditorium and held their class there. 

Math: Key terms: plus sign, equal sign, sum, addend and addition sentence. We practice adding numbers in their horizontal form.

Reading: We reviewed and practiced some more initial, medial and ending consonant sounds. All the children have been doing very well, we will have a Phonics assessment tomorrow, there is no need to study for this quiz. It is all material we have been practicing and reviewing in class,  consonant sounds.   Please remember to help your child study for their spelling quiz on Friday.

Social Studies: We had a two hour block of social studies today, tomorrow we will do the same for science. We shared our maps of their homes and described where everything was. Later we drew a map of the classroom, they did a wonderful job! We copied some key words and concepts in our social studies notebooks from Unit 1 within our book. 

ECA (Extra Curricular Activity) time is coming up next period, and in an effort to know everyone in the school a little better, first grade will spend their time with Ms. Easterling (2nd grade teacher) today and they will do a fun activity together, while I receive the 2nd graders.

Tuesday, Aug. 25th 2015

Recap of our day:

Language Arts: We continued to make sentences, proofread and discussed how important capital letters and periods are. Began understanding and making our own Telling Sentences.

Math: We add 2 part to make a whole. We used plastic colored counters to work in groups putting them together and counting the whole amount. We will be practicing our addition skills all week!

Social Studies: Introduction to maps, legends, symbols and getting around. We made our own symbols for a map inside of our SS workbook.

Science: Today we became scientist and proposed a new a question: Would we find more green leaves or brown leaved on the playground floor.

 


 


We discussed our hypothesis (guess) and planned a procedure. We went outside and wrote down data to communicate our findings. We really were like scientist!
 Homework tonight: Create a map of your house with your parents. Include symbols for at least three things.

Monday, Aug. 24th 2015

Hello all, and welcome to a new week in 1st grade! Here is a quick recap of our Monday:

Assembly: Sister Heart gave a small presentation on the 800 Jubilee of the Dominican Order.  A new art competition for the school Houses has been announced. Student may participate by drawing possible images for their House according to their symbols. The winners will have their drawing represent their House.

Health: Mr. Yanna has informed me that a few students still don't have their Health class folder, please send those in so your child may begin gathering their worksheets and organizing everything for his class. Thank you!

Math: We began Chapter 2 today, Addition facts and strategies. We should be completing the chapter in the following two weeks with an assessment scheduled for September 4th. If there is any change in that date I will let you know. 

Reading: Some students gave small presentation on the books they read at home during the weekend. They did a great job! We have began a new story titled "The Big Trip". We will finish the story Friday.

Spelling: Students have been given the words for their first spelling quiz we will be having this Friday. From now on they will have spelling quizzes every week, Monday they will copy the words and Friday will be the quiz. Please have them review the spelling in their homes, this week we are focusing on words with the Long /e/ sound. Words are:
 1.me 2.tree 3.sea 4.be 5.keep
Lets encourage good handwriting as well!

Social studies: Talked about the location of things, in front of, behind, across from, next to, besides. 

Homework for today: MPB pg. 2.1 / Practice spelling words (you can spell orally with your child or have them write it in their spelling tab.

Happy Friday to All

Dear parents,
We have had a terrific second week of school! First grade is doing so well! Today we worked on some special projects:

We wrote about the book we are reading this week from the library. Everyone wrote adjectives describing the stories and drew pictures to represent them. 

Kids had PE class with Mr. Yanna, they played Monster Tag and talked about balance.

In Math class we completed the Chapter 1 assessment, I will be giving you their test back tomorrow during the Parent Teacher meetings, if you are unable to attend, I will send their folder home with it on Monday.

In computer class today with Ms. Valde, they learned about coloring by number on the computer.

Today we worked on a special project where we talked and shared about ourselves and our families with partners, we made big posters talking about our lives.


Today is the first day of Extra Curricular Activities!

Homework : Oral Book Report Read your library book or any book you'd like and Monday you will tell us about the story you read. Who was in it? What happened? How did it finish? Did you like it?

I am very excited to meet all of you tomorrow at our Open House!

Hi all!

Here is a quick recap of our day:

Language Arts: We began by making sentences together and finding the naming parts. We moved on today to recognizing the action parts of sentences. I am so proud of all the students are able to successfully identify each part in a sentence.

Cristian Living: Students had their first class of CL today and met Father Prudencio, they had a great time with him while drawing pictures of their families and  talking about themselves to get to know one and other. 

Math: We reviewed for our chapter 1 test tomorrow, solved many problems on the board and in our books. I remind you the word problems will be read together but the answer must be found on their own. 

Reading/Phonics: Today in phonics we began identifying medial consonant sounds, unscrambled familiar words and worked on our Phonics workbooks. Everyone seems to be advancing at a good pace :)  

Week 2 of Music class with Ms. Ng ! 

Science: We began out "We are Scientist" booklet. We will be adding worksheets and activities to the book as we complete tasks that show we can use our inquiry skills. Today we worked on classifying and communicating, Putting things into groups. 

Mr. Tung has included a note in their assignment Books today, please look for it or send me a message if you don't find it.  

Homework: Language Arts - WBP pg 3 and 4 (This is the workbook with a panda on the cover). 

This year for student council there will be a representative of each grade, today we discussed what voting was and did it in our classroom. Our new representative for the 1st grade is Jonathan Chen.

Mid Week Post Week 2

Hello parents!

Today in Grade 1:

Language Arts: Wrote sentences together and began learning about the naming parts of a sentence, the subject or nouns. We finished some pages in our Language Arts Work Book.

PE: Kids played games outside with Mr. Yanna during PE, I remind you to please send an extra shirt for your children to change into after PE, as they are sweaty and wet and the classroom will have the air conditioner on.  

Math: Began solving word problems, students are encouraged to draw pictures to better organize the ideas of a word problem, however it is not necessary if they can find the answer another way. There will be a math assessment (quiz) on Friday on the skills learned in Chapter 1. For assessment on the word problems, we will read the problem together, and talk about how to solve it, but the students will have to find the answer on their own.   

Reading / Phonics: Reviewed consonant sounds, and did some work pages in our phonics work book. Created word chains such as cat-mat-rat-pat-lap-map...

Social Studies: Talked about school workers and their names and responsibilities.
Compared and contrasted peoples jobs. Finished a SS worksheet


Science: Talked more about Classifying and Communicating information. We made many graphs and classified students into different groups such as age groups. gender groups, which pets you have and whats your favorite food.

Today is Amber's birthday! She brought us cake and cookies and we had a fun time sharing and wishing Amber a great new year of life!
