Hello parents! Here is what we did today:

Language Arts: Understanding the concept of Nouns, classifying them as person, place or thing. Understanding that the naming part of sentences are made of the main nouns.  We have started Unit 3 today.

Math: Review of question words which indicate whether students should add or subtract when reading a bar graph. "How much more/less..." means you should subtract. When reading "...al together" you should add.

Social Studies: Key question we discussed and should know by now include:
  • What is a president?
  • Who is the president of Taiwan?
  • Who is the president of The United States of America?
  • Where does he live?
  • What is the group of people who help write laws?
  • What is the important paper where they write them?
  • What are borders?
Science: Began Unit 3: Animals! Please make sure your child had a notebook for Science, if they don't please send one in for tomorrow. Today we learned about the differences between living and non living. We learned that living things need water, food and space to survive. We also learned they have to move, change and reproduce.

Hello parents!, Today we are officially starting Quarter 2, today in class we discussed what quarters meant in the school year and what we should be expecting at the end of a quarter and at beginning of a new one. We have been and will be very busy in class these coming weeks with new materials and assessments. Here is what we did today:

Assembly: Opening remarks of the new quarter and found out what place all the DISK houses are in. Red team is in the lead this week!

Math: Important terms to remember: Tally charts, pictographs, bar graphs, more than, less than, equal to. We will continue to complete bar graphs and other charts this week, as well as review important vocabulary, and next week Tuesday 20th we will have an assessment for Unit 1 which will include basic addition and subtraction as well as making, reading and interpreting graphs.

Reading & Spelling: The spelling words for this week are compound words, which are two different words put together to make a new one. Keep in mind when practicing with your child that there is no space left between the words:

1. rainbow
2. bedtime
3. bathtub
4. sunset
5. backpack
6. flagpole
7. playpen
8. raincoat
9. goldfish
10. rowboat
11. outdoor
12. outside

We are still reading Tomas Rivera from our Journeys book, as we will be focusing on individual students reading out loud.

Social Studies: Read "Our Country's Presidents" Learned about George Washington the 1st president of the USA and Thomas Jefferson (3rd president) and Barack Obama, the current and 44th president of the USA. Completed an Activity page from their workbooks.

Homework: Write 3 sentences with spelling words in your spelling tab. Complete "Bar Graphs- Garden Creatures" work page.

I still have not received all the funds (NT$200) for the Field Trip next week, please send them in with the permission slip, or let me know if your child can not attend.

As some of you know may know, last year for All Saints Day (This year will be Oct. 30th) students were allowed to put on their costumes for the fashion show, and costumes were according to themes for the classrooms. This year there are no themes so feel free to pick out any costume you would like for your child, as long as it is age appropriate and not scary.

Thank you all for your support, have a great day,
Ms. L.

Hello parents,

Hope you are having a great week! This is what we did in Grade 1 today:

Language Arts: Discussed how we can write a new fiction story. Since we wrote a non fiction story last week, we will write a fiction one this week following the writing process steps we have been learning about. So far our brainstorming activity led s to choose a minion as a main character!

Math: Today we learned bout how we convert a tally graph, or pictograph into a bar graph. We discussed why it was easier to read information from a bar graph as well.

Science: We learned that materials are what objects are made of. We also classified them as human made or natural. Examples of human made: plastic, glass and concrete. Examples of natural: wood, wool, cotton and soil. The kids will have a small quiz on this Friday.

We have been finishing and reviewing some of the exams. They will be sent to you tomorrow in their folders, with some other work done in the quarter. Please sign the folder and send it all back, it will be give to you as a packet at the end of the school year.

Homework: Two Math sheets 4.1 Tally Charts Practice. Write 3 more sentences with spelling words. The grade 5 class came to visit us last period and were helping their buddies with some of the homework, so some of them may have it done already.

We sent home registration for Kaohsiung Spelling Bee if any one is interested in signing up. I would like to kindly remind you I am still collecting money and permission slips for the field trip coming up. I am also still collecting preferences for electives of the second quarter, they will begin Friday of next week.

It has come to my attention that some parents might have different expectation for the year, or questions about books or homework, please feel free to schedule a meeting with me at any time, you can contact me through Line, email (phyllislopez@hotmail.com) or Dojo. If you would like a class meeting to touch on some of these issues as a team, that would be great too. I think if we work together and keep communication open we can have a great year!

Have a wonderful night,
Ms. Lopez

Hello all! Hope you had a fun an relaxing weekend and stayed safe and dry from the typhoon!

Exam week is upon us and we started with Math today. We spent the day practicing basic math skills that we have acquired in this past unit and reviewing for tomorrow's exams. We will have Language Arts and Phonics, which is all their homework from me for tonight, just study and review for the exams. They will also be having Chinese and Health exam. There will be no more homework from me for the rest of the week except to review for their exams and Reading Log if they have time.

We have been notified that Ms. Valde, the computer teacher, will not be here with us this week. She has had a family emergency and flew back to the Philippines, so the computer test will be postponed until she returns. If you have any questions for the exams, please let me know.

Have a great week,
Ms. L.
