Hi parents,
We have finally finished with exams and are really excited about 4th quarter and final quarter. So many things still left to do and learn!

Today we:

Reviewed our exams and corrected them to find our mistakes and earned some bonus points.

Began an introduction to Chapter 10 Math: Number Orders. Completed exercises in our books and took turns calling out numbers and using the words "right before" "in between" and "right after"

We practiced counting syllables and vowels in words. We separated words into syllables and added new vocabulary to our phonics booklets.

In social studies we talked about what "history" meant and different ways we measure time. Read an excerpt called "Understanding our Past".

Thank you to Julia who brought these great film cards so we were able to watch the watch the eclipse this morning as well as watch a live recording from Borneo where we could watch the Total eclipse! Kids loved it!

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2016

Hello parents, we have been  busy these days in school, here is a quick recap from class for Monday and Tuesday:

Math: Continue to work on place values. We are learning how place values can make adding and subtracting easier, as now we can work so well with 1-9 digits. We are looking at different ways of forming numbers and of solving word problems that include multiplication by understanding place values.

Multi step operation example: If Jon has 8 boxes or apples, and in each boxes there are 10 apples, how many apples does he have? What about if there are two more apples outside of the box? How many apples altogether?

10+10+10+10+10+10+10+10=80     80+2=82

Language Arts and Spelling: We have been reviewing the parts of speech nouns and verbs and have moved on to introduce adjectives. The spelling words this week are all adjectives and students will be using a lot of them to form sentences with the intention of describing characters in stories. We are in the process of creating personal short stores. Today we worked on character development and adjectives.

Spelling Words: pretty, massive, terrible, horrible, bright, brave, wild, loud, beautiful, honest, wise, perfect, silly, fancy and selfish

Reading: Story Maps, developing characters. understanding problems and solutions in story plots.

Social Studies: We continue to learn about culture in different countries and what they mean. Its hat time again for Class Presentations!

Assignment Oral Presentation: For this presentation, each child has a country and they must present certain information about that country's culture. Here should be the important topics to discuss: Language, food, religion, clothes, music and any interesting information. Their presentations do not have to be long, but must include this information. Kids can bring any souvenirs or food that they would like to share from their country. If you would like to change their country for any reason just let me know.  And I hope this will really encourage the kids to really learn about the world!
