Science Fair

Hello parents! Hope you had a great weekend. This post is dedicated to answering some of your Science Fair questions and some information that might help you.

First there are many resources that can help you look for questions and topics for
Science Fair Questions, as well as help you understand how to complete each step. I will be working with the kids by modeling a science project in the following weeks so they can understand what will be expected from the judges. As a group project we will be doing the following experiment in class:

Question: What effect does soda, coffee, and tea have on our teeth?

This will be the first step, developing a question (problem) in order to make an experiment.  If you are still undecided on a project, you can fill in the information on this page to generate ideas:

or

If you would like to build something, for example a volcano, it

must include a problem/purpose. For example:

Will the eruption of a model volcano be bigger is I use more baking soda or vinegar?

These are examples of how a board should be organized at the end of the project, there are many different styles of boards and some contain more information, but the most important steps that must be shown for Grade 1 students include:problem, materials, hypothesis, procedure, data and results and conclusion. They do NOT need to worry about controls and variables.
We will be discussing each one in class and I will be updating with examples.

I will be assigning different parts of the projects to be written on different days and will work with students in class to make sure they understand what is expected. We are still about 2 months away so we have enough time for working on everything and I will guide them along the way.

The first part will be formulating a question/problem:

Examples:

·           Does music have an affect on plant growth?
·           What is the best way to keep an ice cube from melting?
·           Can the food we eat affect our heart rate?
·           Can background noise levels affect how well we concentrate?
·           Does acid rain affect the growth of aquatic plants?
·           Does the color of light used on plants affect how well they grow?
·           What plant fertilizer works best?
·           Does the color of a room affect human behavior?
·           Do athletic students have better lung capacity?
·           What brand of battery lasts the longest?
·           Do natural or chemical fertilizers work the best

If you are having problems formalizing a question, please send me the group information and I will work with that group to help them make one around their topic. If at any point you would like to change the question, you just have to let me know.

Questions are due Monday January 29th.  They will be taking a form home this week to fill in.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to let me know, you can send me Line message or email!

Thank you!
